Album Info:WSOR provides the vast majority of the train action in the rail hub of Rock County. It remains an interesting regional railroad under Watco ownership although there have been quite a few changes. UP serves a few industries around town and runs the occasional unit grain train through to the Landmark Co-op at Evansville via their Harvard Sub from Proviso, although their traffic is a shell of what it was before the GM plant closed in 2008. CP makes cameo appearances via their ex-SOO/IMRL/IC&E branch line up from Davis Jct./Rockford, IL.

WAMX 4175 behind 6334
Title:  WAMX 4175 behind 6334
Description:  This unit ran as WSOR 4006 in the Gardner era, and was one of the initial group of six ex-Rock Island SD40-2s acquired by the railroad in the early 2000s. Still no luck for me in finding sister 4170 (formerly WSOR 4001) in its new 40th Anniversary scheme.

Description:  They'll hang a right (left from our perspective) at the spring switch just ahead onto home rails. Straight ahead of the train is UP trackage, which apparently hasn't been used since the last snowfall.

Quartet Crossing Court Street
Title:  Quartet Crossing Court Street
Description:  Note the white-topped Associated Signal Company electronic bell on the crossing signal across the street. These began to pop up in the last days of the C&NW, and a few still exist. They sound similar to early General Signal Co. e-bells.

Title:  Y303 crew eases the train out onto the south Rock River bridge
Description:  They'll pause here while another yard job adds a few cars to the rear of the train, then pull down to Delavan Drive and park it for later retrieval by the T002 crew to take it on to BRC Clearing via Fox Lake/Rondout.

WAMX 4197
Title:  WAMX 4197
Description:  Buried in the middle of a quintet on the fuel ramp is the newest addition to the roster, and the freshest red and gray paint other than 4170's 40th Anniversary which I have yet to see.

Quintet on the fuel ramp
Title:  Quintet on the fuel ramp
Description:  Bracketing new kid on the block 4197 are 4182 and 4181, the ex-BN duo that were the last locomotive acquisition by the Gardner-era WSOR, numbered 4012 and 4013 and remaining in their Cascade Green until 2017 or so. Then is 3928, one of two GP39-2s added to the fleet in 2014 in ugly patched UP yellow, it received the 35th Anniversary scheme in June, 2015. A yard crew has just tacked 4192 onto the end. It is one of four ex-C&O SD40M-2s (built as SD40s) acquired by the railroad in 2007-08 as WSOR 4076-79, re# WAMX 4189-4192. 4189/90 have since been sent to service on other Watco properties (at least one of them to the Grand Elk Railroad in Michigan).

WAMX 4172 and the two veteran Helm sisters on the fuel ramp
Title:  WAMX 4172 and the two veteran Helm sisters on the fuel ramp
Description:  6334 and 6313 have been on the WSOR (6313 apparently disappeared for a while, but came back) since early 2017. I'm still annoyed I never got a good shot of 6305 (MPI paint) during its brief stint in 2019.

WAMX 4197 and mates rest under the glow of the yard lights
Title:  WAMX 4197 and mates rest under the glow of the yard lights
Description:  Something seems "off" about the long hood lettering on this recently painted red and gray unit vs. its predecessors. It's crammed too close at the end, and the ampersand isn't evenly spaced between the words. I'm told this was done at NRE in Silvis as the WSOR Horicon shop apparently is no more. Note it is also lacking the "YOU HAVE THE RIGHT AND THE OBLIGATION TO WORK SAFELY" notices above the steps that were ubiquitous on all previous red and gray repaints. This unit is ex-BN by way of FURX/NREX, and was previously in service at the Watco transloading site in Hammond, IN wearing their standard "yellow jacket" scheme.

Five-unit power move pauses at the entrance to the WSOR yard
Title:  Five-unit power move pauses at the entrance to the WSOR yard
Description:  I thought this was what was left of T004, because I heard them giving back a warrant on the Waukesha Sub, but then a T004 came into town later in the afternoon. This is also my first train photo with my new Canon T8i. There was a bit of a learning curve with the focus feedback system on this camera vs. that of my old T1i, so I blurred the shots of this move crossing the road a few minutes later.

Title:  An interesting hodgepodge of power in front of the roundhouse
Description:  The Helm sisters would seem to be shop queens, since I always see them here of late. Coupled to them is 4192, and also in the shot are 4197 (latest "standard" red and gray repaint) and 4219 (ex-CP, only one with a low headlight).

A who's who of WSOR power
Title:  A who's who of WSOR power
Description:  From left, we have 4170, the class unit of what were the original six ex-CRIP SD40-2s acquired by the railroad in the early 2000s (then numbered 4001). It has been recently repainted into a special 40th Anniversary scheme. Then is 4219, ex-CP and the only red and gray unit with a low headlight. 6334 is one of the two Helm lease units (6313 is coupled behind it) than has been on the property since 2017. 4181, trailing the five-unit power move, is ex-BN and one of the last units acquired by the railroad in the Gardner era. 3947, facing off with the lead unit of the power move on the same track, is the first "new" unit brought on to the property under Watco ownership.

Title:  Shoving into the Evonik complex
Description:  The chemical plant has been here since 1957 under various names. Title:  T004 comes around the wye and enters the Fox Lake Sub
Description:  I'd thought the five-unit power move I'd seen coming into town from the north earlier was T004, so I was surprised to hear this train announce their approach to town. I can't imagine 4174 was their only power out of Horicon, but 4180 and 4170 were picked up from the fuel ramp here in Janesville.

40 Years Safely Serving Our Communities With Pride
Title:  40 Years Safely Serving Our Communities With Pride
Description:  I really like this 40th Anniversary scheme and really wanted to catch it as soon as I saw the first photos of it. Notable features are the gray roof, Watco logos on the sides and end of the long hood, and white stripes on the rear plow. Notably lacking (and a telltale sign that this wasn't done at Horicon) are the "YOU HAVE THE RIGHT AND THE OBLIGATION TO WORK SAFELY" notices that were above the steps on all red and gray repaints prior to this and 4197.

Going-away shot
Title:  Going-away shot
Description:  Of course would rather it was leading, but we can still see the straight striping (rather like NS' "Catfish Whiskers") and red goose logo (only the second one on the roster with that, after 4219) on the short hood. Kind of unusual for WSOR units to have the horn midway along the long hood as well, most have it mounted on top of the cab.

YJA65 on the "loop" off Beloit Avenue
Title:  YJA65 on the "loop" off Beloit Avenue
Description:  It's not possible to see much detail of UP's ex-C&NW South Janesville Yard from the ground, but from the satellite view one can see there's a loop track on the west end which has a spur off it to serve Seneca Foods; crosses over one of the yard leads on a diamond, used to form one leg of a wye (the other leg is stubbed off, with the switch removed) and encircles a few stub-ended RIP tracks which pass through the area where the roundhouse and turntable used to be. Chase of this train continues in the album "UP Harvard Subdivision State Line-S. Janesville."
