MILW X414
Title:  MILW X414
Description:  MILW X414, Bensenville, Ilinois, September 1979, photo by Chuck Zeiler. Thip was once one of the Milwaukee Road's homemade branch line combines, reduced to MOW service. The following is from the March 1998 issue of Mainline Modeler (page 70): The Milwaukee Road provided extensive passenger service the farming communities of the "granger states" in 1934. To reduce costs, the road constructed all-steel lightweight eoobines for mixed train service. These distinctive arch-window cars were built at the same time as the new lightweight passenger cars, which would later become the 1935 Hmawatha. After experimental cars 4000 and 4400 were constructed in early 1934, combines 2700 and 2701 were built using the same lightweight all-steel modular construction techiiques. Late in 1934, six more were constructed, 2702-2707. These first eight cars were smooth-sided and contained a 23' 9-1/2" passenger compartment and a 25' 7" exprjss cokpartment. The first two cars rode on Bettendorf caboose trucks, and the last six rode on the new all-welded outside-equalized caboose trucks. The spartan interiors yere lighted with kerosene lamps and heated with a coal stove in the passenger and express ends. The cars were not air-conditioned and had movable windows. Later, in 1938,$ten cars (2708-2717) were constructed following the latest structural side design, which included seven longitudinal ribs and rectangular windows. These cars were slightlt longer with 16-1/4" being added to the express compartment between the express door and the end of the body. Another ten rib side cars (2750-3759) were constructed in Jume-July 1938 and were extended another 15' in length to contain a mail compartment. These cars rode on slightly heavier all-welded inside-equalized trucks. All 24 combines lasted into the 1960's in revenue serviee, with the majority then in SOO ownership as MOW cars.

MILW X419
Title:  MILW X419
Description:  Milwaukee Road X419 at Bensenville, Illinois on an unknown day in August 1979, Ektachrome by Chuck Zeiler. I thought this might be a former sleeper, but noticed a radio antenna on the roof and possibly a plated over window in the vestibule, so maybe it was a former lounge car. Jerry M. LaBoda adds: Ex-Iandee, nee-Alaska HW cafe - lounge solarium observation. Earl Selchert adds: This car was used as living quarters for the roadmaster on the steel gang 5528 from 1979 to 1985.

MILW F-M H-16-44 429
Title:  MILW F-M H-16-44 429
Description:  Milwaukee Road F-M H-16-44 429 at Savanna, Illinois on July 23, 1963, photograph by Chuck Zeiler. Built by Fairbanks-Morse as road number 2509 in January 1956 ( c/n 16L994 ), class 16-FRS on the Milwaukee, it was renumbered to 429 and retired in February 1976. More information from Joe Lewnard:

This is a neat photo Chuck, as it's one of the few photos I've seen of the original 429, which in this photo is a Phase III unit. To my knowledge it was wrecked and retired in the mid-1960s, and 401, an H-16-44 with a Phase 1 carbody, was renumbered to 429 for accounting purposes. The unit retired in 1976 was actually the former 401. Milwaukee Road's diesel roster can be quite confusing.

Title:  MILW MP15AC 439
Description:  Milwaukee Road MP15AC 439 at about Armitage and Elston Avenues in Chicago, Illinois on October 8, 1987, Kodachrome by Chuck Zeiler. This locomotive was built in January 1976 (c/n 75625-6), became SOO 1505 sometime after February 21, 1985 when the Milwaukee Road's railroad assets were sold to the Soo Line Corporation. When the lease expired on April 1, 1991, it was returned to lessor, American Financial Group (AFG), stored until sale to Union Pacific. On February 2, 1993 it was renumbered to UP 1400, and on August 1, 2001, it became UPY 1400. Obviously, the gentleman on the front is checking clearances as they head toward some street running on Kingsbury Street.

MILW RS3 452
Title:  MILW RS3 452
Description:  Milwaukee Road RS3 452 at Bensenville, Illinois on January 9, 1966, Kodachrome by Chuck Zeiler. Number 452 was built in December 1953 as road number 2477 (c/n 80581), renumbered around 1959 to 452. Sometime before May 1963 this locomotive and several other RS2's and RS3's exchanged their original road trucks for Blunt trucks that were on S2 switchers. The switchers now riding on road trucks were traded to EMD as credit on GP30's, and the Alco road trucks were removed, refurbished, and placed under the GP30's. The RS3's with Blunt trucks were hard riding in road service, but did not last very long, and were traded to EMD in 1968 for new power.

MILW RS3 470
Title:  MILW RS3 470
Description:  MILW RS3 470, Bensenville, Illinois January 9, 1966, photo by Chuck Zeiler. Built in November 1955 as Milwaukee Road number 2495 (c/n 81710), classed 16-ARS (16 hundred horsepower, Alco Road Switcher), it was scrapped at the Milwaukee, Wisconsin shops in June 1975. This is a late model RS3, having rectangular filtered carbody openings in two of the doors. Previous models had unfiltered louvers, allowing the prime mover to ingest dirt and sand, generally not recommended. The careful observer will note that the trailing RS3 is riding on Blunt trucks. This is a result of S2 switchers being traded to EMD on an order for GP30's. The S2's were sent to EMD (Pielet Bros.) on the RS3's AAR Type B trucks, which were removed and installed on the GP30's and returned to the Milwaukee Road. The S2's Blunt trucks were installed under some RS3's.

MILW H-16-66 524
Title:  MILW H-16-66 524
Description:  MILW H-16-66 524, Escanaba, Michigan, November 9, 1975, photo by J. H. Nixon, Chuck Zeiler collection. There is conflicting information about this locomotive, the following is from the book, 'Faribanks-Morse Locomotives In Color', by Jim Boyd: The Milwaukee Road was one of only four customers to buy the H-16-66 Baby Trainmasters. They were delivered in two batches, numbers 2125-2127 (later 550-552) were built during August-September 1953, and 2128-2130 (later, 553-555, later still 547-549) were built during September 1953, and all were classed 16-FRS-6 by the Milwaukee. Somehow, the second batch had lower constrution (serial) numbers.

The book does not connect this road number to any previous number, but this web site ( http://www.trainweb.org/milwaukee/roster.txt ) claims that 524 was built as 2128, then renumbered to 553, then 547, then 524. The web site offers c/n 16L-757 as the serial for number 524. Take your pick. It appears that 524 was out of service on January 1976, and sold for scrap to Precision National in June 1976. Finally, consulting the book, "Milwaukee Road Locomotives, Volume Three", by Thomas J. Strauss, this locomotive was built as 2128 (c/n 16L693), renumbered to 553, then 547, then 524, equipped with MU connections at both ends, no dynamic brakes. Only 60 H16-66's were built, with the C&NW owning 50, the Milwaukee owning eight, Alcoa owning one, and TVA owning one.

MILW SD10 544
Title:  MILW SD10 544
Description:  MILW SD10 544, Bensenville, Illinois, April 9, 1986, photo by Chuck Zeiler. Built in October 1953 (c/n 18309) on EMD Order 6516 as MILW SD7 2223, later renumbered 523. When it was rebuilt into a SD10, it was renumbered 544, classed as 18.5-ERS-6 (reflecting the increase in horsepower from the as-delivered 1500 to 1850), and later became DME 544. The Milwaukee Road rebuilt seventeen [D-7's and four SD-9's starting in late 1974 and continuing until January 1976, designating the 21 rebuilt locomotives as SD-10's, classed 18-ERS-6 (1800 horsepowdr - E(MD) Road Switcher - 6 axles). The boxy structure on the roof behind the cab is a Horst air filter, which most of the rebuilt units had, but the last six (556-561. received a lower profile Farr air filter. Also during the rebuilding process, the air reservoirs were changed from a vertical stacked arrangement to horizontal to keep them out of harms way in the event of a derailment.
