Album Info:Rail items found in Mendon, Ohio by some people around 2003. A piece of rail, spikes and what looks like it could be a pin for a link and pin coupler. Also two pieces of coal. Mendon, Ohio used to have a railroad that ran through it. The railroad was originally the narrow gauge Toledo, Cincinnati & Saint Louis Railroad, a subsidiary of the narrow gauge Toledo, Delphos and Burlington Railroad. The two companies merged in 1882 and kept the TC&StL name. This system entered receivership in 1883 and was split at foreclosure in 1884 and 1885. This TC&StL line was purchased by the Cincinnati, Hamilton and Dayton Railroad. In 1917, the CH&D was bought by the Baltimore and Ohio. B&O abandoned this line on April 1, 1923. When the railroad left, the grain-shipping trade, the budding sugar beet market, and all hope of securing industry went along with it. Many farmers lost their original investment and Mendon experienced slow economic growth. There is basically no evidence of a railroad having been in Mendon. Tracks and depot were gone by 1928. CH&D depot was located about 50 feet southwest of the town hall near the corner of Main Street and Market Street. Nearby was the CH&D hotel on Main Street. I have an old map of the area dated 1882. I also have an old map of northern Ohio. Both of these maps show a railroad in Mendon.
