IC 9601 vs. Inattentive Driver |
Description: |
CN local has a close call with an inattentive driver in a “quiet zone” as it crosses Washington St., via former C&NW rails, while switching in Menasha, WI on 7 Aug. ’14. The engineer blew the horn when he realized the driver did not see the train and was not stopping, but the truck was on the tracks by the time the driver could stop and start to back up. Both the train and the truck were moving slowly, so the near-collision was easily avoided. |

There hasn’t been much rain in the past month, so the river is currently low and slow and the algae is in full bloom. |

CN local parallels Harrison St. as it crosses over from the remnants of the former C&NW mainline to the former SOO mainline at the south end of the yard at Neenah, WI on 10 Aug. '14. Neenah Foundry Plant 2 & Plant 3 are partially visible on the left. Plant 2 opened in 1960 and Plant 3 was built in 1967. Plant 1 opened in 1918 and stood about a mile to the north, until it was closed in 1994 and eventually demolished. I presume the train, with about 40 cars, was returning from a trip to Fond du Lac. |

IC 9601 |
Description: |
CN local heads southwest via former joint MILW/SOO rails enroute back to the former SOO yard at Neenah, WI on 21 May '15. The corporate headquarters of Plexus, partially visible on the right, occupies part of the site of the former P. H. Glatfelter Co. paper mill, which stood here for 132 years, the oldest part of the original mill was constructed in 1874. Glatfelter purchased the mill from Bergstrom Paper Co. in 1979. Bergstrom had purchased the mill, originally Winnebago Paper, in 1904. Glatfelter moved the jobs to Ohio in June 2006, the mill stood idle for about two years until it was torn down, demolition was completed in May 2009. The vertical steel structure on the left used to carry steam pipes over the tracks to the paper mill from the defunct Fox Valley Energy Center (formerly Minergy Fox Valley Glass Aggregate Plant). The ca. 1871 WC (later SOO) depot stood on the south (right) side of the tracks at the west end of Wisconsin Ave., right about where the middle of the train is. It was built on pilings in the south end of Little Lake Butte des Morts, these tracks were originally on a trestle over the water. All of the earth under and to the left (north) of these rails is landfill, deposited in the south end of the lake by the paper mills starting in the 1950s. That former landfill is now Arrowhead Park. The depot was converted to a freight house when a new depot was constructed on Sherry St. in 1891. The depot that stood here was demolished or moved between 1906 and 1913. |

CN local approaches Towmen Rd. as it hauls 34 cars southwest via former C&NW rails at Shawano Junction in the Town of Menasha, WI on 24 Oct. '15. This spot used to be named Fox River Junction, after several segments of the original C&NW mainline through Menasha and Neenah were removed and a turnout was installed here which allows the bypass of missing C&NW rails by using former SOO rails, the rails in the foreground. |

A CN local passes the former N. Superior St. grade crossing as it heads northeast via former C&NW rails at Appleton, WI on 19 May '18. Train was headed for Little Chute and Kaukauna. This grade crossing was removed ca. the 3rd week of Nov. '13. The large building in the background at left is the former H. C. Prange Co. (a.k.a. Prange's) department store, 126 W. College Ave., Appleton, WI. The drab, utilitarian structure was erected ca. 1961, replacing the historic and beautiful Pettibone-Peabody Co. department store (H. C. Prange purchased the company in ‘46). It is currently home to City Hall and a children's museum. A pair of tall buildings loom above the locomotive. The nearest and shorter one is AT&T Communications & Network Services, 221 W. Washington St., Appleton, WI. The taller one is the former Aid Association of Lutherans (AAL) building, 222 W. College Ave., Appleton, WI, erected in 1952. After AAL’s successor vacated the building, it has become home to multiple tenants, and it has been bestowed with the unimaginative moniker of The 222 Building. |

A CN local returns to the north end of the former SOO yard at Neenah, WI on 17 Jun. '18. This view would have been prevented by the dominating silhouette of the original Neenah Foundry facility, later known as Plant 1, which stood here for over ¾’s of a century. Established in 1872 as Aylward Plow Works (a.k.a. Aylward & Sons) at 120 N. Lake St., they erected a new foundry at 500 W. Winneconne Ave. in 1918 “in a rural area of southwestern Neenah.” The name of Neenah Foundry was adopted in 1922. Expanded numerous times over the years, it became Plant 1 in 1960 when Plant 2 was constructed in the then rural area at the intersection of Byrd Ave. and the aptly named Aylward St. (followed by Plant 3 in 1967). Plant 1 was closed in 1994, the corporate overlords didn’t want to spend any money to update the plant. It stood abandoned for a while and was eventually demolished. |

A CN local transitions from the west leg of the wye to the north leg of the wye at the north end of the former SOO yard at Neenah, WI on 15 Apr. '19. I am left to wonder why they were compelled to navigate the wye in order to back into the yard. The locomotive is passing the remnants of the foundation from the ca. 1955 masonry SOO depot. There are rail sections supported by concrete blocks and railroad ties stacked upon it. It was built to replace the wooden depot built in 1891 on Sherry St., about 850 ft. to the southeast, which was torn down soon after the new one opened. Eggers Industries, originally Hardwood Products Co., 164 N. Lake St., Neenah, WI, an active rail customer, is visible in the background at left. Clearwater Paper Corp., historically Kimberly-Clark’s Lakeview mill, 249 N. Lake St., Neenah, WI (physically located in Fox Crossing, WI (formerly Town of Menasha, WI until 14 Apr. '16)), an active rail customer, is partially visible in the background at right. |

IC 9601 |
Description: |
A CN local traverses the north leg of the wye at the north end of the former SOO yard at Neenah, WI on 15 Apr. '19. I am left to wonder why they were compelled to navigate the wye in order to back into the yard. Beyond the train lies Arrowhead Park, a closed paper sludge landfill. Before the landfill was opened in the '50s, the south shore of Little Lake Butte des Morts came right up to the north leg of the wye. The dump truck and bulldozer in the background rest where a large quantity of fill is being added to the eastern half of the park, in preparation of future improvements. The Fox Valley Energy Center (formerly Minergy Fox Valley Glass Aggregate Plant) dominated the eastern half of the landfill from its opening in Jan. '98 until demolition was completed in the spring of '16. |

IC 9601 |
Description: |
A CN local crosses one of four diamonds which remain on this mostly industrial island (formed when the Fox River navigation canal was excavated) as it heads southwest via former joint MILW/SOO rails at Menasha, WI, on 30 Mar. '20. TC Transcontinental, Inc., 271 River St., an active rail customer, can be seen in the background. The site was originally home to the Menasha Printing & Carton Company, formed in 1917 through the merger of two older, neighboring companies, the Menasha Printing Co. and the Menasha Carton Co. Acquired by Marathon Paper (later Marathon Corp.) in '27, it became the Marathon Div. of American Can Co. in '57. James River Corp. acquired American Can in '82. At some point it was acquired by Bemis Co., who sold it to Exopack Holding Corp. (Sun Capital Partners, Inc.) in '10. At some point it became Coveris, until its purchase by TC Transcontinental, Inc. in '18. Looking southeast from River St. The street now jogs to the left, but it used to continue straight ahead here. At some point in the late 1990s or early 2000s, part of River St. was vacated and re-routed to facilitate expansion of this facility. |

Description: |
A CN local crosses Edna Ave. and approaches High St. as it heads southwest via the former joint MILW/SOO rails on Doty Island at Neenah, WI on 30 Mar. '20. Local was headed back to the yard in Neenah and had one locomotive, IC 9601. Levenhagen Oil Corp., 321 High St., can be seen to the left. Previously known as the Standard Oil Depot, the facility dates to at least 1893. The facility used to receive rail service, but has not for some time. It is hard to believe that there used to be four tracks crossing these two streets. |

EJE 703, IC 9601, IC 9568 |
Description: |
Looking south over the north end of the CN, former SOO, yard from the Winneconne Ave. overpass at Neenah, WI, on 18 Apr. '20. Locomotives include EJE 703, IC 9601, IC 9568. I wish I could photograph this scene without the handrail in the foreground, but the morons who designed this overpass (with the tacit approval of the morons who pretend to be the local government) only incorporated a sidewalk on one side of the bridge, the north side. There is no provision for bicycles to safely cross the overpass, except to use the unusually narrow sidewalk. However, the sidewalk is too narrow for bicycles and pedestrians to safely pass each other. Sure, bicyclists are legally entitled to use the roadway, but you will risk your life if you are foolish enough to exercise that legal right. The majority of motorists drive like idiots on Winneconne Ave. (as well as just about every other freeway, interstate, highway, county road, country road, back road, gravel road, dirt road, access road, public street, private street, driveway, pioneer trail, parking lot, and all-too-often sidewalk, in the United States). The Main St. overpass was ill-designed in the same manner. This ineptly designed overpass was constructed ca. 1988, so we will probably have to wait 20 years, or more, for an overpass with sufficient sidewalks and bike lanes on both sides. |

IC 9601 and IC 9568 |
Description: |
A CN local parallels Union St. and passes the former Monroe St. grade crossing at the north end of the former SOO yard at Neenah, WI, on 9 May '20. Local, with 30 cars for Appleton, Little Chute, and Kaukauna, had two locomotives, IC 9601 and IC 9568, with some unique, expedient hand-stenciling. The area between the tracks and Union St., from Main St. to Monroe St., used to be the yard. I don't know when the current, significantly larger yard (extending southwestward from Winneconne Ave.) was built, but a map from 1909 shows the yard still here. |
