Title:  ARR 1000 at the Museum of Alaska Transportation and Industry
Description:  Se also: http://railfan44.rrpicturearchives.net/showPicture.aspx?id=1712384 Pat Durant wrote: As built #1000 and 1001 were the first diesel locomotives on the ARR. A special war time authorization was obtained to purchase the ALCO RS1 units for use through the new tunnels into Whittier. When the fleet expanded and they were designated as yard switchers the short hood where the steam generator had been housed was lowered and the new windows installed for visibility and safety. If you open the doors you will find they added two stacks of railroad wheels for ballast there also.
