Shown here (L to R) is Pennsylvania Railroad engine #9465 and two more units whose road numbers are not recorded. All are FF-20's built by Fairbanks-Morse and rated at 2,000 horsepower each. #9465 was constructed in January of 1948 and retired in September of 1962 after just 14 years of revenue service. Here is page three of a 22-page booklet published by the Pennsylvania Railroad entitled "A Pictorial Review Of Progress On The Pennsylvania." It was issued originally in March of 1953. Top Photo, Partial Caption: "This is the New York-Washington-St. Louis 'St. Louisan' crossing the Little Juniata River in central Pennsylvania." Prominent here is PRR engine #5901, an EP-20 built by GM-EMD in September of 1945, rated at 2,000 horsepower, and presently on display at the Railroad Museum of Pennsylvania in Strasburg. Bottom Photo, Partial Caption: "This three-unit, 6,000 horsepower diesel-electric freight unit is shown pulling a fast, through train near Chicago." Prominent here is PRR engine #9465, an FF-20 built by Fairbanks-Morse in January of 1948, rated at 2,000 horsepower, and retired in September of 1962. |

Altoona Action. Here is a duplicate 35mm color slide via Al Chione that was taken in the Pennsylvania Railroad's Erecting & Machine Shop storage yard in Altoona, Pennsylvania, c. 1963. The photographer is not identified. Prominent here is PRR engine #9465, an FF-20 built by Fairbanks-Morse in January of 1948, rated at 2,000 horsepower, and retired in September of 1962 after just 14 years of revenue service. In this context, it's being "cannibalized" for parts. |
