NOPSI 903 |
Description: |
New Orleans Public Service CANAL LINE car 903 had just run around the loop at the foot of Canal Street. The photo was taken from the pedestrian viaduct which crossed several railroad tracks and provided unobstructed access to the ferry landing on the Mississippi River. The black sedan with the white circular emblem that was parked to the left of the 903 belonged to a NOPSI supervisor who was overseeing operations at this end of the line. Car 903 was built by the Perley A. Thomas Car Works in 1923 and was still in operation on the ST. CHARLES LINE in 2021. |

NOPSI 916 |
Description: |
New Orleans Public Service, Inc. car 916 was outbound on the JACKSON LINE on Dryades Street approaching Jackson Avenue. Overhead was a maze of wires for both streetcars and the new trackless trolleys which were about to replace them. The JACKSON cars were replaced by gasoline-powered buses on 19 May 1947, and these were replaced by electric buses on 2 October 1947. The double overhead wires here would be used by both JACKSON and FRERET route trackless trolleys. The 3-story brick building in the background was the Spaulding Business College. It had been built for the Louisiana Industrial Life Insurance Co., and it was still standing in 2020. |

NOPSI 918 |
Description: |
New Orleans Public Service cars 915 and 918 were at the outer end of the original CANAL car line, on Canal Street at City Park Avenue. Both of the cars had been built by the Perley A. Thomas Car Works in 1924. The 915 is still in service on the ST. CHARLES line in 2020, while the 918 was sold to the Greater High Point Civic Center & Museum Corporation in North Carolina right after the CANAL car line was discontinued in 1964. The Perley Thomas cars had been built in High Point and there was a plan to display the car there; but this never happened and the car was donated to the North Carolina Transportation Museum near Salisbury in 1978. |

NOPSI Streetcars |
Description: |
There were no less than four New Orleans Public Service Inc. streetcars in this view at the foot of Canal Street, which was then the city's main thoroughfare. This was the end of the line, where the cars turned and awaited their next run. The elevated walkway behind the cars provided pedestrian access over Southern Pacific, Louisville & Nashville and New Orleans Public Belt tracks to the Mississippi River ferry landing. The turret on the other side of the walkway was on the L&N station and the roof next to it was the L&N trainshed. The opening scene of the 1951 movie A STREETCAR NAMED DESIRE, where Blanche DuBois gets off of a train, was filmed at this station. (approximate month and day) |

NOPSI 927 |
Description: |
New Orleans Public Service car 927 was outbound on the CANAL line on Canal Street. It was stopped at the intersection with Burgundy Street on the left and University Place on the right, with the Maison Blanche Building on the other side of the car. At that time, there were still four tracks on the median of Canal Street from the Mississippi River to Rampart Street, even though there were only two car lines left. The 927 had been built by the Perley A. Thomas Car Works in 1924 and was scrapped on 12 June 1964, right after the CANAL car line had been replaced with buses. The white light on the traffic signal indicated that streetcars could cross the intersection. |

NOPSI Canal Station |
Description: |
This land is still used to store streetcars, but it doesn’t look like this anymore! The New Orleans Public Service, Inc. (NOPSI) CANAL STATION and BUS GARAGE was in the 2900-block of Canal Street. (STATION was the NOPSI name for its vehicle service and storage facilities.) This property is now used by the New Orleans Regional Transit Authority to service and store modern street cars, but this is what it looked like on 31 March 1955. Perley Thomas car 930 is parked outside with several of its siblings, while an unidentified new diesel-powered GM Model TDH-5105 and prewar gasoline-powered White Model 788 1459 are in the carbarn. |

New Orleans Public Service ST. CLAUDE LINE car 1008 was on North Rampart Street at Conti on the line’s last day of streetcar operation. This was one of 20 cars which arrived in 1926, and they were the last streetcars purchased by NOPSI. Unlike most of NOPSI’s cars – which only had two motors – cars 1000-1019 had four. These cars were used on several lines until April 1935 when they were assigned exclusively to the ST. CLAUDE LINE, and all 20 were scrapped soon after they were replaced by buses on the day after this photo was taken. Mossy Oldsmobile was at 420 North Rampart from 1934 until 1956, when it moved to 1331 South Broad Street |
