Wf class 684 |
Description: |
Wf class 4-6-4T No. 684 with six empties for mines on Rewanui Incline, date unknown (1958 is the best guess), Agfa print by J.A.T. Terry, Chuck Zeiler collection. Hugh McCraken adds the following: The Rewanui Incline was on the West Coast of the South Island, just north of Greymouth. A Fell centre-rail was used for braking purposes only - but quite a lot of gear was sent south from the Rimutaka Incline. W and We class locos, deemed as less successful on the Rimutaka Incline, were the mainstay on the Rewanui, along with Ww locos fitted with centre-rail brakes. Brake vans went south at various stages, particularly after the Rimutaka line closed in 1955. The Rimutaka Incline was between Summit and Cross Creek, some 60km northeast of Wellington on the government's Wairarapa Line - quite distance from and in a different island to the Rewanui Incline. See more about this system at this link: http://www.rimutaka-incline-railway.org.nz/history/fell-centre-rail.html |

BO 4-6-4 #5047 - Baltimore & Ohio |
Description: |
This appears to be an original builder's photo of the 4-6-4 Hudson #5047 built by the Baltimore & Ohio Railroad shops. The B&O shops at Mount Clare built four unique Hudsons. The first was a conversion and the other three were built from the ground up. Each of these locomotives was a different and unique design. The first Hudson was built in 1933 and was a conversion of a Class P-1c, number 5047 (seen here in its original sepia color) done at Mt. Clare in Baltimore, MD. This locomotive was given Class V-1 designation and had 74" drivers, 21.5 x 28 cylinders and weighed 355,000 lbs and had a tractive effort of 52,000 lbs. This locomotive was used successfully on the Cumberland, Pittsburgh and Akron divisions and was retired in 1950. |

BO 4-6-4 #5360 - Baltimore & Ohio |
Description: |
Here is a rare B&O steam locomotive - 1 of only 4 homeshops built Hudson that the B&O had. This was the last of four that was built and a very streamlined, plain looking loco. Each of the previous Hudsons were experimental and unique. Since B&O did not order any, their experiments must not have proven successful. According to www.steamlocomotive.com, was used in passenger service west of Cumberland, MD and lasted until 1950. Specs - V-4 class, 80" drivers, 22.5 x 29 cylinders, weighed 369,000 lbs with a tractive effort of 52,000 lbs. Unknown photographer. |

Michigan AuSable Valley Railroad #5661 |
Description: |
I believe that is Howard Schrader himself admiring his beautiful locomotive. Unfortunately the railroad was shut down in October 2017 after the Schraders' decided to retired. A new buyer purchased the business and property in 2019. However, because of a design flaw and insect damage to the trestles the new owners delayed reopening of the railroad to the Summer of 2021. Unfortunately an illness in the family and the economic effects of COVID led to the new owners ultimately selling the trains and permanently closing the railroad. |
