| Burlington Northern Railroad GP35 2562 at Clyde, Illinois on an unknown day in March 1981, Kodachrome by Chuck Zeiler. Built as SLSF 712 in April 1964 (c/n 28923) on EMD Order 7705 (SLSF #'s 701-716), it became BN 2562 on November 21, 1980 and was retired in July 1985. In the 1977-1980 BN Annual there are photos of several SLSF GP35's under lease, and the photos of those numbered between 701-716 show this air reservoir tank arrangement. The reason for this arrangement was the extended fuel tank option (3000 gallons) which forced the air tanks to the top of the hood, earning these particular locomotives the nickname "torpedo boats". |
