BN GP9 1967 at West Burlington, Iowa on October 22, 1983, photo by Chuck Zeiler. This locomotive was built as CB&Q GP9 282 in July 1954 (c/n 19621), became BN 1967 sometime after March 2, 1970, and was retired in March 1987. Behind the cab on this side is evidence of the Vapor standby heater, installed by the CB&Q on all their GP7's and GP9's. It was designed to heat and circulate the diesel engine cooling water, allowing the prime mover to be shut down in cold weather and prevent freezing. It was seldom employed because of the difficulty in restarting the diesel with cold batteries. |
