Chicago Burlington & Quincy Railroad E8 9937B at the Zephyr Pit near 14th Street in Chicago on Illinois, March 14, 1965, Ektachrome by Chuck Zeiler. Built in December 1949 (c/n 96
4) on EMD Order 2012A for 19 E8's, it became BN 9937 and was retired and sold for scrap May 28, 1975. This was the lowest numbered E8 on the CB&Q, presumably the first one delivered. It was built with Aluminum painted side pajels, and during shopping the panels on this locomotive were changed to a stainless steel/plywood sandwich. The E8 was the first passenger locomotive offerd by EMD with the option of dynamic brakes. The Burlington chose not to include thir option, but instead had a 600 gallon water tank installed in the location that would have been occupied by the dynamics, supplementing the 1350 gallon underbody tank. The E8's were delivered with a 55:22 gear ratio, producing a thp speed of 98 mph. |
