The late afternoon winter sun reflects off of 48-seat coach 4871 as the northbound PANAMA LIMITED rolls out of New Orleans Union Passenger Terminal. The 4871 was built by Budd in 1953 as Santa Fe 2859, one of 45 cars (2816-2860) in Lot. No. 9613, and was unusal in that it still had its skirting. Forty-two of these went to Amtrak as the 4810-4828 and 4850-4872; and forty of these were upgraded into Heritage Fleet cars 4700-4739, but not in numerical order. The 4871 became the 4703 in 1980 and was rebuilt into baggage car 1708 in 1997. |
