Slope to Works. Here is an original photo that I took in Altoona, Pennsylvania, on 6 June 1965. Shown here (R to L) are Pennsylvania Railroad engines #2533, #2532, and #2531. All are GF-25's built by General Electric in September of 1964 and rated at 2,500 horsepower each. In this context, they've just passed under the 4th Street Footbridge and will shortly pass under the 7th Street Bridge with an ore train on its way up the West Slope of the Allegheny Mountains to the steel mills in Pittsburgh. The black water tower is all that remains from the "Age of Steam" when there was a small coal/sand/watering facility at this location. (#32 of 44) |
