A CN local passes SOO 736 while traversing Telulah Park as it heads southwest with 14 cars via former C&NW rails at Appleton, WI on 30 Oct. '18. The local was returning from Kimberly and Combined Locks. SOO 736, an Alco 4-6-2, was donated to the City of Appleton by the Soo Line, through the efforts of John M. Balliet. Balliet paid for the construction of a temporary spur to get the locomotive into the park, the gravel and asphalt pad under the locomotive, a fence to deter vandals, as well as landscaping around the display. The locomotive arrived on 14 Nov. ‘59. When asked why he did it, he said, “so that children would know what [steam locomotives] looked like.” He owned an insurance agency, but railroads were a hobby. He served as a director for Missouri Pacific, Michigan Central, Lake Erie & Eastern, and Pittsburgh & Lake Erie railroads. |
