Panarail Tourism Company car RIO GATUN was outside of Pete Messina’s car shop near New Orleans, awaiting its final details. Notice the open observation area which had been added to the car. It was shipped to Cristobal, Panama on 30 March 2001 along with three other cars and five former Amtrak F40PH locomotives. Two more cars were shipped in October 2001. The car had been made by Budd in 1951 as Pennsylvania Railroad 1599, one of 32 60-seat coaches with 14-seat smoking sections built for service on the CONGRESSIONAL LIMITED and the SENATOR. It was subsequently Penn Central 1599 and it was assigned Amtrak number 7416 in 1976, but it retained its PC number until remodeled into high-capacity HEP CLOCKER car 7618 in December 1981. |
