UP X3977
Next stop was Cody Park, where UP X3977 and UP 6922 are on display. UP X3977 is 1 of 2 UP Challengers that are still left today, the other being UP 3985, which is undergoing overhaul at Cheyenne. The only other steam locomotives on the UP roster were the Big Boys, which the Challengers actually shaped for the last 3 orders. These 4-6-6-4 beasts were mainly used on freight service, but were assigned to some passenger moves as well. A total of 105 were built between 1936 and 1944, and ceased to operate in the late 1950s.
