In need of power, ICG purchasde 40 GP38-2s (9600-9639) in 1974 from EMD, which was the largest order for new locomotives in ICG's short history. Ideally suited to the diverse needs of the road, the new GP38-2s worked in every class of service, from locals to intermodals and coal trains to manifests. Illlinois Central #9608 is an example of one of these ubiquitous GP38-s. Hammond rail fan Mark Stanek took the photo |
