SP Transfer Run
A Southern Pacific transfer job was pulling cars off of the Louisville & Nashville interchange at L&N JUNCTION in New Orleans. The train was bound for the SP’s AVONDALE YARD, on the west side of the Mississippi River, and the locomotives were on the Southern Railway’s New Orleans Terminal Co. subsidiary, which the SP used to get to the Huey P. Long Bridge. SP 5230, 5228, and 5232 were Baldwin AS616 units built in August 1950. Seven of these units were assigned to New Orleans for transfer service in 1960, and all were retired or sent elsewhere by mid-October 1967.
