PRR 5827, BP-60, c. 1949
Celebration. Here is a duplicate 35mm color slide (converted to B&W) of a photo by Mr. C. Weaver that was taken near Lewistown, Pennsylvania, c. 1949. Shown here (L to R) is Pennsylvania Railroad engine #5827 and another "Centipede" whose number is not recorded. Both are BP-60's built by the Baldwin Locomotive Works as BP-60 passenger engines rated at 3,000 horsepower each, but later regeared and reclassified as 2,250 horsepower BH-50's for freight and helper service only. #5827 was built in October of 1948 and retired in September of 1962 after just 14 years of service. They're rockin' 'n' rollin' past LEWIS Tower with an eastbound passenger train.

Tom Beckett General Amazing that a locomotive of that wheel arrangement could get built. Nowadays there's not a chance in hell such a thing would ever see the light of day. In that first generation era, when there was a lot of experimenntation, anything was possible!! 1/21/2022 3:34:03 AM
