With the beautiful arched stone bridge and the sleek 4-6-6-4 Challenger, the photo by C.W. "Bill" Jernstrom looks almost European in styling. Built by Alco-Schenectady in 1943, this massive and powerful brute worked for the Delaware & Hudson until retirement and scrapping sometime in 1952-53 after barely 10 years of service. Specs - serial #70020, class J-95, 69" drivers, impressive boiler pressure of 285 psi, four 20.5x32" cylinders, massive engine weight of 597,000 lg, and impressive tractive effort of 94,000 lb. All of the D&H Challengers were scrapped between 1952-52 with sadly only #1508 tender having survived. Although C.W. Jernstrom identified the location as Union Dale, PA, Mike Woodruff (see comment below) more accuratedly idenitified it as the Starrucca Viaduct by Lanewboro, PA. Thanks, Mike! |
