Tom Beckett	General	As Mike notes above, this is Lanesboro PA, where the D&H Penn Division crossed under the Erie's famous Starrucca Viaduct. The line here would remain active down into Carbondale and Scranton til the early 80's, when it was abandoned south of here after the D&H acquired the old DLW main from Binghamton to Scranton over Tunkhannock Viaduct. After the abandonment, the Penn Division remained to a point about two miles south. There was a connection from the Erie-by then Conrail's Southern Tier Line-and enough track to get a whole freight train on and clear the switch. The connection on the Tier was CP Lanesboro. It was used by the D&H as a bypass to the Belden tunnel while it was being rebuilt in 1985-86, with trains leaving Binghamton on the Tier, taking the connection at CP Lanesboro, then reversing on the tail track, and running the old Penn Division to Nineveh Jct, near Harpursville NY. DH 4-6-6-4 #1534 - Delaware & Hudson
With the beautiful arched stone bridge and the sleek 4-6-6-4 Challenger, the photo by C.W. "Bill" Jernstrom looks almost European in styling. Built by Alco-Schenectady in 1943, this massive and powerful brute worked for the Delaware & Hudson until retirement and scrapping sometime in 1952-53 after barely 10 years of service. Specs - serial #70020, class J-95, 69" drivers, impressive boiler pressure of 285 psi, four 20.5x32" cylinders, massive engine weight of 597,000 lg, and impressive tractive effort of 94,000 lb. All of the D&H Challengers were scrapped between 1952-52 with sadly only #1508 tender having survived. Although C.W. Jernstrom identified the location as Union Dale, PA, Mike Woodruff (see comment below) more accuratedly idenitified it as the Starrucca Viaduct by Lanewboro, PA. Thanks, Mike!
