Here is a photo by H.W. Pontin via Rail Photo Service that was taken at the Horseshoe Curve near Altoona, Pennsylvania, in July of 1940. Shown here is Pennsylvania Railroad engine #6861, an M-1 (4-8-2) "Mountain" built by the Baldwin Locomotive Works in October of 1926 and retired in February of 1956 after 30 years of faithful service. It's rounding the Curve with a passenger train on its way down the Allegheny Mountains to Altoona and points East. John S. Fisher Collection; #12 of 14. |
