Description: |
Volkmer. Here is an image of a photo by William D. Volkmer that was taken in Altoona, Pennsylvania, on 25 June 1958. Shown near the Passenger Station is Pennsylvania Railroad engine #8608, an APS-24MS built by the American Locomotive Company in December of 1955 and rated at 2,400 horsepower. It's moving so as to couple onto a westbound passenger train that's barely visible at the left. Sandwiched in between are (R to L) engines #8667 and two more units whose road numbers are not recorded. All are AS-18AM's built by ALCo and rated at 1,800 horsepower each. #8667 was built in February of 1958. Several of the PRR's 12th Street Car Shop buildings dominate the background. William E.
