GM&O E7 102 at about 14th Street in Chicago, Illinos on March 7, 1965, Ektachrome by Chuck Zeiler. Who wouldn't like to Photoshop that baggage car to match? This is Train Number 3, The Abraham Lincoln. According to the June 1965 edition of The Official Guide, it departed Chicago's Union Station daily at 4:50 PM (CST) and arrived in Saint Louis at 10:10 PM. Included in the consist was a Observation-Parlor Lounge Car (#30), Parlor Car with Drawing Room (#31), Cocktail-Lounge for Parlor Car and Coach passengers, a Dining Car, and Reclining Seat Coaches. Also listed is a connection at Saint Louis with unnamed MP Train Number 7 which continued on to Little Rock, Arkansas. |

Gulf Mobile & Ohio Railroad E7 102 southbound on The Limited at Joliet, Illinois on July 11, 1965, Kodachrome by Chuck Zeiler. Built as Alton 102 in March 1945 (c/n 2003) on EMD Order E544A, it was one of four E7's built for the Alton on that shop order (No.'s 102, 102A, 103, 103A). This unit was wrecked at Ocuya, Illinois in August 1971 and scrapped at Jackson, Mississippi. It is seen here at the head of Train No. 1, The Limited, due in Joliet at 11:55 AM CDT, and this being Daylight Saving Time, it's almost 1:00 PM. According to the June 1965 Official Guide, 'All through Gulf Mobile & Ohio trains are air-conditioned and diesel-electric powered. All parlor lounge cars Trains 1-2-3 and 4 are owned and operated by the GM&O RR.' |

This locomotive was built as Alton E7 102 (c/n 2003), wrecked and retired in August 1971. It is seen here bringing GM&O's daily Train No, 1, The Limited, to its first stop out of Union Station in Chicago. It's due at Joliet (according to the June 1965 Official Guide) at 11:55 AM CST, so it's almost 1:00 PM Daylight Savings Time, when I snapped this photo. If on time, it will arrive at it's final stop, Saint Louis, Missouri at 4:43 CST, 283.9 miles from its starting point. This train was equipped with a Parlor Car (with Drawing room), Dining-Lounge car and reclining seat coaches. Also listed on the GM&O page in the Official Guide was a connection with MP Train No. 1, The Texas Eagle, which offered a connection to Little Rock, Arkansas, departing Saint Louis at 5:30 PM and arriving at Little Rock at 11:55 PM. |

GM&O E7 102 at Saint Louis Union Station, Saint Louis, Missouri on August 14, 1965, photo by Chuck Zeiler. This locomotive was built in March 1945 (c/n 2003) as Alton E7 102 and became GM&O 102 after the 1947 merger. It was wrecked in August 1971 and scrapped. This is an example of a railroad modification to the EMD design air ventilation to the engine room. As built, there were unfiltered louvers behind the cab door above the letter G, plated over by the GM&O. In place of the louvers, the railroad cut three filtered openings above the word MOBILE in the car body to allow intake of combustion air. There is also an extra air intake grill at the top rear of the car body, not seen on the trailing E7. This was sometimes applied by railroads (also seen on CB&Q E7's) to allow intake of makeup air for the steam generators. |
