Album Info:Traveling on Amtrak's Texas Eagle, Capitol Limited, Acela Services, and Downeaster Services! I rode on Amtrak from Poplar Bluff, Missouri to Portland, ME with Site Contributor Kevin Farlow on Peaks Island, ME with his family just off the coast of Portland for vacation. Departing June 28 on #422 I went to Chicago where I met up with Kevin and also met John Poshepny. While I Kev and John, we missed our connection with #30. We had to wait until the next day's #30 to go to Washington D.C. We were provided a hotel room at the Wyndham Resort near O'Hare Airport. On June 29th we saw some CN action and went up to the Sears Tower Skydeck before boarding #30 and arriving in WAS on June 30th too late to board #2172, the Acela Express to Boston. We had to wait until the 10 P.M. departure of The Regional Acela Train #66. Arriving in Boston South Station early on the 1st we had breakfast with his aunt and then rode The T Subway to Boston North Station to board Train # 681. After arriving in Portland and riding the ferry over to Peaks Island. July 2nd we visited the Maine Narrow Gauge Railroad. July 5th we railfanned the Downeaster, as we did on the 9th. On the 10th we rode Train #682 to Boston North Station for a day trip and a day of railfanning. We went down to South Station where we saw Amtrak Acelas. We saw MBTA Trains all over the city. After eating in the North End with his Aunt Beth at an Italian Restaurant, we arrived back at North Station we viewed more MBTA and boarded Amtrak #685. On July 15th we boarded Train #684 to North Station. We spent the night with his aunt and on the 16th visited Fenway Park and saw a Red Sox Game vs. The Oakland Athletics. The 17th we awoke early to board Train# 2153 Acela Express, what a ride! We arrived in Washington D.C. and made the connection with Train #29 to Chicagos arriving on the 18th we said our good byes and Kevin boarded Train #5, the California Zephyr to Denver and I boarded #21 arriving home the 19th.

Title:  Riding in the Cab of the Amtrak Downeaster Train #685
Description:  Kevin and I got to ride in the cab, thanks to Conductor Marilyn Hunkins and Engineer Dewey, the same engineer that let us on the NPCU back on July 1st. Kevin held down the jump seat and I sat in the Assistant Engineer's seat for about 30 minutes from Saco to Portland. This was taken at 76 mph just south of Old Orchard Beach with a 79 mph speed limit at 8:28 P.M., 12 miles and 17 minutes from Portland. The train and crew was featured in an issue of Downeast The Magazine of Maine in June 2002. Yes, we did get to blow the horn.

Description:  Dewey gives the train some dynamic brake as we come into Old Orchard Beach at 56 mph. Thanks a lot to the Downeaster Crews, a great bunch of employees! At the time Dewey had 46 days left before retirement after 38 years, he is now retired from Amtrak He also thinks Kevin's Aunt was a closet foamer, I think so too.

Description:  It's been a good trip but now it's time to go home. Our Train sits behind the Portland Transportation Center at 12:29 P.M., we will depart at 1:55 P.M. Our train was actually about 2 hours late into Boston due to a Heat Restriction Issued by Guilford Rail because it was above 90 degrees.

Joe's Old MP Caboose
Title:  Joe's Old MP Caboose
Description:  This Missouri Pacific Caboose was formerly owned by Joe Falvey of Poplar Bluff, MO. In 2001 he sold it to Bob Herbert of Rockview, MD. It was moved up here that summer and fall and sits right next to the Capitol Limited's Route along the CSX Tracks where I shot it at 4:38 P.M. I remember playing on this caboose at Joe's house when I was little since it was in his front yard. Joe was the Road Foreman of Engines in Poplar Bluff for the MP/UP from 1968-1991 when he retired with 42 years of service.
