PRR Coaling Tipple, 1965 |
Description: |
Coaling Tipple. Here is an original telephoto view that I took of the Pennsylvania Railroad's coaling tipple in East Altoona, Pennsylvania, on 11 September 1965. Here is a view facing northeast. Once upon a time, this was one of the busiest and most important places in all of PRR-Altoona. Four steam locomotives could be serviced simultaneously! Now, it is just an empty shell ~ haunted by ghosts of glories past! |

PRR Coaling Tipple, 1965 |
Description: |
Coaling Tipple. Here's the view ~ facing railroad west ~ from atop the Pennsylvania Railroad's coaling tipple in East Altoona, Pennsylvania, on 11 September 1965. It consists of two original telephotos of mine that have been expertly spliced together by Mr. Lance Myers (AltoonaWorks.info). At the far left is a yellow work train with a 250-ton wrecking crane. Beyond Juniata's 17th Street Bridge are the orange Railroader's YMCA and the eastbound Classification Yard. The square building in the center is the Power House. Further to the right is the East Altoona Roundhouse, now just half of its original 50-stall size. The large structure at the far right ~ beyond Juniata's 8th Street Bridge ~ is the Erecting & Machine Shop. Close inspection also reveals the presence of three locomotives heading our way. |

Description: |
Coaling Tipple. Here is an original telephoto view that I took from atop the Pennsylvania Railroad's coaling tipple in East Altoona, Pennsylvania, on 11 September 1965. Here is another view facing railroad west. Shown here are two unidentified PRR locomotives that have just exited the Roundhouse. The GM-EMD switcher has pulled an inert ALCo locomotive to this point. After the Railroader in the photo throws the switch, the GM-EMD will push the ALCo to the East Altoona Ready Tracks so that the latter may return to revenue service. Partially visible on the right are more deadlined locomotives. |

Description: |
Coaling Tipple. Here is an original telephoto view that I took from atop the Pennsylvania Railroad's coaling tipple in East Altoona, Pennsylvania, on 11 September 1965. Here is a view facing railroad north. A speeding westbound passenger train is about to pass through "The Hole" under HOMER Tower (not shown at the left). In the background are the Westbound Hump tracks linking the Classification Yard (to the left) with the Receiving Yard (to the right). In the foreground are two in- and out-bound tracks for freight traffic. The girder bridge at the lower right passes over the East Branch of the Juniata River, which then winds its way through Tyrone and Spruce Creek and merges eventually with the West Branch near Huntingdon. |

Coaling Tipple. Here is an original photo that I took from atop the Pennsylvania Railroad's coaling tipple in East Altoona, Pennsylvania, on 11 September 1965. Here is a view facing northeast toward Bellwood and the Juniata Valley. Visible at the far left are the PRR's Westbound Receiving Yards, now filled with junk freight cars. In the center are literally dozens of deadlined diesels, along with some old freight cars and steam locomotive tenders. Several eastbound coal trains are marshalled at the far right. The pit with the yellow sand in it once held a turntable. |

Coaling Tipple. Here is an original telephoto view that I took from atop the Pennsylvania Railroad's coaling tipple in East Altoona, Pennsylvania, on 11 September 1965. Shown here (L to R) are PRR engines #8541, #8532, #8530, #8531, #8534, and #8535. All are ES-12M switchers built by GM-EMD and rated at 1,200 horsepower each. #8541 was built in 1952, but all of the others were built in 1953. They're pulling a westbound 39-car mixed-cargo freight train past ANTIS Tower. The cabin car is #477534. This is another view facing northeast. On the far left are the Westbound Receiving Yards, filled with rusting freight cars. On the far right, many deadlined diesels, old freight cars, and even some steam locomotive tenders are visible. |

This is a view toward the southern side of the tipple; Altoona is to the right. The slots in the concrete once had chutes in which coal slid into engine tenders. Description: |
Coaling Tipple. Here is an original photo that I took at the Pennsylvania Railroad's coaling tipple in East Altoona, Pennsylvania, on 11 September 1965. Shown here on either side of the venerable Water Tower is a single decomissioned steam locomotive tender and a Baldwin switcher that was involved in a serious accident. (Regrettably, I did not record the switcher's road number.) In the near background are some obsolete passenger cars. In the distance are the Westbound Classification Yards. |

Description: |
Coaling Tipple. Here is an original photo that I took of the Pennsylvania Railroad's coaling tipple in East Altoona, Pennsylvania, in October of 1965. Visible here is the covered area where loaded coal cars were emptied of their contents. The coal was then hauled up to the top of the coaling tower and dumped via wheeled buckets that were pulled by cables. Note the string of "Yellow Dot" 100-ton hopper cars a bit further back. Brush Mountain dominates the distance. |
