Washington-Western 475 |
Description: |
Here was Washington-Western Alco S2 475 with 11 ICG hopper cars. The photo was taken on a Saturday, so nothing was running. The locomotive was Alco 75658, built in March 1948 as Texas Pacific-Missouri Pacific Terminal Railroad of New Orleans number 11. It was subsequently renumbered 1057 and was sold to the Washington-Western (Standard Gravel Co.) in February 1967. After operating as WW 1057 it was renumbered 475, and somewhere along the line its cab was modified or replaced. The ICG abandoned the branch line which served Clifton in 1980, and locomotive was sold to Relco at Joliet, Illinois the next year. |

Washington-Western Screening Plant |
Description: |
One of the fascinating and entertaing aspects of gravel pits was their often-unique machinery. The Clifton screening plant included four hopper cars and a school bus. Not surprisingly, the Green Brothers -- owners of the Standard Gravel Co. and the Washington-Western Railway -- painted almost all of their equipment green! |

Green Brothers 0-6-0 156 |
Description: |
This 0-6-0 was built by Lima in March 1924 as Texas & New Orleans 156; and although it had been renumbered 842 in 1953 to clear the 100-series for diesels, its original number was showing on the cab when this photo was taken. The loco had been sold to the Green Brothers in January 1956 for use in the sand and gravel operations on the north side of Lake Pontchartrain, and was last used at Jenkins before being moved and stored at Clifton. The loco is shown here on the north side of Franklinton, as the ICG (former GM&O) branch which had served Clifton was being torn up. It was subsequently placed on display at the Casey Jones Museum in Vaughn, Mississippi in 1984 and then moved to Terry, Mississippi in May 2005. |
