Title:
PRR 8665, AS-18AM, 1959
Description:
Horseshoe Curve-1959. Here is an original photo that I took at the Horseshoe Curve near Altoona, Pennsylvania, on 3 September 1959. Shown here (R to L) are Pennsylvania Railroad engine #8665, one unit whose road number is unknown, and #8668. All are AS-18AM's built by the American Locomotive Company and rated at 1,800 horsepower each. #8665 and #8668 were both constructed in February of 1958. They're pushing a mixed-cargo freight train around the Curve and up the Allegheny Mountains to Gallitzin, where they'll be uncoupled and returned to East Altoona for further assignments. In the foreground is PRR N-5 cabin car #477181.
